China has temporarily banned entry of foreign nationals travelling from Canada, even if they hold valid Chinese residence permits for work, the Chinese consulate in Toronto said.

“All foreign nationals who hold valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters and reunion are temporarily not allowed to enter China from Canada,” the consulate said in a statement on its website on Saturday.

Entry with diplomatic and service visas will not be affected, it said.

The suspension comes as Canada clamps down on cross-border travel due to COVID-19 concerns. Canada reported 4,255 new cases on Saturday, with 19,942 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

All airline passengers arriving in Canada will be required to take a COVID-19 test at the airport and wait in a hotel for up to three days at their expense until the results arrive, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday.

In coming weeks Canadian vacationers returning from the United States by land will have to show a negative COVID-19 test result before being allowed entry.

Starting from last November, there are 11 countries on the ban list whose citizens are not allowed to enter China - the embassies are not issuing new visas and the valid residence permits are suspended. And the countries are: France, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, India, Ethiopia, UK, Belgium, Bangladesh, the Phillipines and Nigeria.

Now, with the Chinese new year approaching, Canada becomes the 12th on the ban list.

On hearing this heartbreaking news, those in a group called "Canadians trying to get back to China" felt devastated and despaired.

With Chinese government advising its people not to travel back home during the spring festival, presumably, there will be more countries added on the ban list in the near future.

Previously, China once suspended the valid residence permit on March 28, 2020, and lifted the ban half year later on Septermber 28.

Some predicts the ban might be lifted until some time in March when it gets warmer and the pandemic situation will greatly improved here in China.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope the pandemic can be over soon in the future with the vaccine entering into effect.
